21 August 1961, Brooklyn, New York, USA. Born of Puerto Rican parents, Morales is one of the USA’s premier remixers. His style, melodic house with a strong disco influence, belies his personal physique and presence, that of a pencil-bearded, tattooed body-builder. Married with a son, he works out for two hours every day, although he also employs a bodyguard for his regular evening shows (he was shot in his youth). As a young man he attended both the Loft and Paradise Garage, before being invited to play at the latter through Judy Weinstein’s For The Record organisation. His other stomping grounds included all the major New York clubs, including the Ozone Layer, Inferno and Better Days. The Morales’ style has graced literally hundreds of records, his first remix being Insync’s ‘Sometimes Love’. He possibly works best in tandem with a strong garage vocalist (Alison Limerick, Ce Ce Penniston, Yazz, Jocelyn Brown).
A good selection of Morales’ greatest work might be permutated from the following: Robert Owens’ ‘I’ll Be Your Friend’, Clive Griffin’s ‘I’ll Be Waiting’, Black Sheep’s ‘Strobelite Honey’, the Pet Shop Boys’ ‘So Hard’, Thompson Twins’ ‘The Saint’ or Limerick’s ‘Where Love Lives’, but the list of major stars who he has completed work for includes Madonna, U2, Björk, Mariah Carey, Michael Jackson and Janet Jackson. Many other remixes have been completed with long-standing friend Frankie Knuckles (as Def-Mix), who he also met through For The Record (Weinstein going on to manage both artists). His productivity is made possible by the fact that he is happy to churn out up to two remixes a week under his own auspices. His live sets, however, are often less glossy than the productions he is best known for: ‘When I DJ I’m not as pretty as a lot of the records I make’. His debut album included guest appearances from Sly Dunbar and Ce Ce Rogers, and generated the club hit ‘In De Ghetto’. As David Morales presents The Face, he enjoyed a UK Top 10 hit with ‘Needin’ U’ in August 1998. He continues to DJ around the world but is particularly popular in the UK and his native New York City.
